עם פתיחת הלחימה, סמ"ר ד' חתר למגע והגיע ליישוב בארי. כשהגיע ליישוב ראה מולו בית בוער, ד' התקרב לבית כדי לבדוק האם יש בו אנשים וחילץ לבדו זוג קשישים מתוך הבית הבוער תוך הרגעתם בקור רוח מוחלט.
בהמשך, סמ"ר ד' יחד עם יחידתו וכוחות משייטת 13 נתקלו במחבלים. במהלך ההיתקלות סמ"ר ד׳ נפגע משלושה כדורים ברגליו. תחת אש, הוא ביצע על עצמו חוסם עורקים תוך כדי שחבריו מחזיקים לו את הרגליים. במקביל, סמ"ר ד' גילה אומץ לב והמשיך לירות ולהילחם. בסיום האירוע חולץ לבית החולים סורוקה.
בזמן הלחימה, מפקד היחידה שלו ולוחמים אחרים סביבו נהרגו וסמ"ר ד' המשיך להילחם.
