In the early hours of the morning, Eshkar Eldan Cohen began to post regular updates on Facebook about the condition of her parents, Sherry and Anadad Eldan, a well-known veteran poet, who live in Be'eri. At first, she still managed to contact her parents and convinced them to go to their safe room and hide before losing all contact with them. "When the news about terrorists infiltrating the kibbutzim began coming out, I called my mother, but she didn't answer. I thought maybe my parents had been murdered," Eldan Cohen described. "My daughter Kesem suggested that I call their neighbor. I called him. The line was was busy. He got back to me and explained that terrorists had infiltrated the kibbutz and that the instruction to residents was to lock themselves in their houses. He didn't have any more information about situation." Eldan Cohen asked the neighbor, who lives across from her parents, if they are alive: "He said he thinks so. That the fighting was not in their area, but in another area not very far from my parents, maybe 100 meters away. My mother called me and asked what was wrong. She didn’t know what was going on. The only information she had was from the TV - I updated her on the situation," Eldan Cohen said. "She amazed me with her composure. She said she was standing in front of a glass window and that she probably shouldn't stand there. She asked me only to call if there was an important update. She told me she loved me. I told her I loved her too." Half an hour later, the two talked again: "There were gunshots in the background. Mom said that she could see from the window someone lying on the grass and shooting. That was a gun fight going on inside the kibbutz. I told her that I had read a news report that special units had arrived at the kibbutzim. Mom added that she thought it was a kibbutz member from the volunteer security team. That he looked like an older man. Mom said that if she dies, she wants us to know that she loves us, and to take good care of ourselves," Eldan Cohen found it difficult to hear. "I told her that I know and that we love her too. My Dad was sleeping in the safe room, so I asked Mom to go join him. At that stage I could barely breathe, and prayed it was not our last goodbye." In the afternoon Eshkar spoke with the person in charge of the elderly care on the kibbutz: "She said she had no information about my parents' condition. The situation in the kibbutz was still bad. I asked her if my parents were still alive and she couldn't give me any answers. A friend wrote to me that the wounded from Be'eri were being evacuated to Soroka hospital and sent me the hospital's phone number. I called to find out if my parents were there. But no, they don't have patients by my parents' names. My heart is predicting the worst."
"At four o'clock in the morning I managed to get in touch with the army officer in charge of the platoon at the kibbutz and directed him to my parents' house. He sent people to check on them. Morning came, there were still terrorists in Be'eri, and the fighting inside the kibbutz was still going on," Eshkar continued. "That night, I called the army officer again. He didn't answer. I thought maybe he had been killed and in the morning I called him again. He told me they couldn't find my parents. That he didn't know where they were, that maybe they were evacuated." At 11:00 in the morning Eshkar received the news that her parents were alive. "I cried and laughed at the same time. My parents were on a bus outside of Be'eri, on the way to a hotel in the Dead Sea," Eldan Cohen was elated. "I was sure they were dead. Mom said she had terrorists inside the house and they shot at the window, they were alone without a caregiver. Dad is almost 100 years old."
